What type of Window Treatments Are the Most Privacy Friendly?

April 30, 2018

Your home is your sanctuary, and if you think like the majority of homeowners, getting New Brunswick window treatments that offer privacy and noise blocking to maintain your castle is a priority. Any window covering is better than a naked window. However there are some window treatments that give you more privacy than others, even on specialty windows.

Providing Privacy on Non-Square Windows

Most large, standard windows you have are easy to cover with just about any window treatment like blinds, shades, or shutters in New Brunswick.

However, there are some situations when you need a specific kind of window treatment to provide adequate privacy and light control. These might be:

  • Bathroom windows where excess moisture might cause problems for fabric window treatments.

  • Sidelight windows that are tall and skinny on which window treatments can be jostled around when the door opens or shuts.

  • Specialty-shape windows such as transoms, circular windows, bay windows, etc., where normal store-bought blinds and drapes can’t cover your window without hiding the window’s unique shape.

  • Large windows that can be difficult to reach like second-story foyer windows.

In these instances, you want window treatments that go the distance to provide privacy to your home.

As a bonus, look for window treatments that can block sound to keep outside noises outside and prevent neighbors from overhearing.

The Window Treatments That Give You The Most Privacy

The best window treatments for privacy that we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to be shut completely, for when blocking all the light and sound you can is your goal. If you want to let light in and see outside, just tilt the louvers. For high windows, you can always position the louvers at an angle so light can come in but passersby can’t see in.

Interior shutters are also great for specialty-shaped windows because they’re custom built to your exact dimensions. And since Polywood shutters are waterproof, they’re perfect for bathrooms.

Another window treatment that helps with privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up minimal space at the top of the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent anyone being able to see in your home. While they can’t be cut to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes made from water resistant material for areas like your bathrooms.

Window Treatments that Don’t Protect Your Privacy

While any window covering offers a basic level of privacy, there are a few that perform poorer than others. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains used to be popular a while back and can add a a breezy feeling to a room. Yet they don’t offer the level of privacy of other window treatments, particularly at night.

Another window covering that isn’t great for privacy are aluminum or heavy blinds, which can snap or get stuck at an angle. If you can’t totally shut the blinds because of breakage, then they’re useless for privacy.
